Stoicism is a Greek school of philosophy founded by Zeno of Citium. It is a philosophy of life that improves positive emotions, reduces negative emotions, and helps us hone our virtues of character. Stoicism provides us a framework for living well and reminds us of what is truly important by providing strategies to get more of what is valuable.

The goal of Stoicism is to acquire inner peace by overcoming adversity, being conscious of your impulses, and practicing self-control. It is important to face the obstacles that come right and not run from them.

Accept That There Are Things Beyond Your Control

Some things such as weather events and natural disasters are beyond your control and there is nothing you can do about it. Do not focus all your resources on things that you cannot control; instead, focus on the things that you can change such as your choices and your judgments.

Knowledge is Wisdom

Try to learn anything that you want to know, but know that you can’t know everything. You can’t learn if you think you know everything. Wisdom is a Stoic virtue and you cultivate your wisdom by admitting that you still have a lot to learn.

Don’t Waste Time on Distractions

Being stoic teaches us that our time is precious and we should not waste it on mindless distractions. This can be tough nowadays since distractions are right in our pockets – our phones. Concentrate on what you are doing at the moment and do not mindlessly check your phone every 20 seconds. Moreover, do not be distracted by current events, world news, and catastrophes. Remember that these are the things you cannot control. It’s good that you are informed about it but do not be stressed or panic about things you cannot control.

Remind yourself that time is the most precious gift. Treasure each moment and make sure that what you’re doing is what you want to learn and accomplish. Figure out your priorities and focus on them.

Enjoy the Moment

You don’t have to not enjoy entertainment to be a stoic. You can still enjoy life’s pleasures and nature’s beauty whenever possible.

Focus on Being Fair

Being stoic teaches us to avoid retribution, revenge, holding grudges, or emotional conflicts. But that doesn’t mean that you have to be cold. If someone wronged you, never hold a grudge or take revenge. Think of a better way to hold them responsible instead of acting with your emotions.

Surround Yourself with People You Respect

Being stoic means that you have to focus more of your time on people who respect you in the sense that they want you to make better decisions, be wiser, and help you be a better person.

Avoid Complaining

Complaining is a sign that you have excessive inner emotions. Instead of being angry or sad at something that you cannot control, try to do something about the situation or simply accept that way it is.
